Sailing

Sailing in Lamlash Bay is a great way of experiencing nature at sea first hand.

What’s involved?

No prior experience is necessary.

All our sessions start at Arran Outdoor Education Centre’s purpose-built slipway.

We are a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised centre, delivering and promoting RYA teaching methods.

During sessions, we can use:

  • our fleet of dinghies
  • any of the centre’s four Hawk 20 keelboats

Laser Picos

Introductory sessions can take the form of getting to grips with our Laser Picos.

These are sailed in front of the centre, with an instructor nearby in a safety boat instead of on board. Depending on progress, participants may also sail the short distance across the bay to the pontoon on Holy Isle.

Hawk 20 keelboats

If the conditions or group needs don’t suit introductory dinghy sessions, then we will often use the Hawk 20 keelboats.

These are far more stable and are sailed with a qualified instructor onboard. During these sessions, you will learn how to work as an effective crew, working the sails and the tiller.

These sessions can take the form of:

  • a sail round the bay
  • circumnavigation of Holy Isle

Other bookings

On request, the centre also runs:

  • sailing schools open to public
  • bookings during the summer holidays
  • RYA sailing courses during non-term time
